South Carolina has developed a very diverse economy, growing from its agricultural roots into hosting advanced research centers, textiles and even tourism. It also had the foresight to set up a state lottery to finance a wide array of scholarships for its college students.

This merit-based program comes in three different levels, depending on how well a local secondary school graduate did. In other words, the higher the grades, the more these scholarships have to offer. What they all have in common is the student must have been a resident of the Palmetto state for over a year, and overall intend to continue their education within the South Carolina state borders.

The smallest of the three main scholarships is the HOPE. It is a renewable, purely merit-based plan and is open to all South Carolina residents, however, it is only available to freshmen. There are other criteria that need to be met in order to qualify. If a student is deemed worthy, the award is $2,650 for the freshmen year. It should also be noted that if you receive the HOPE, you are also locked out from the next two scholarships.

The first of these two is the LIFE Scholarship. If you receive the LIFE, not getting the HOPE is more than compensated for as it is much higher. To qualify for this, a student needs a 3.0 GPA or better (or some equivalent form of grading). Students must also have an SAT score of 1100 or better. As for the award? Now it can go up to $4,700 a year.

The last of the lottery-generated scholarships is the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship. It is different from the HOPE and LIFE Scholarships in a number of ways. For starters, where the first two are automatically considered, the Palmetto must be applied for independently. Applicants must also have a 3.5 GPA, scored 1200 or better on the SAT, and be in the top 6% of their secondary school graduating class. If picked, they could receive up to $6,500 annually, and maybe more.

That isn't all though. If a student intends to pursue a career in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) category, he or she can get what the state calls an "enhancement." This will put an additional $3,500, for a grand total of $10,000, into the total award.

The state isn't the only source for scholarships. Those with plans to go outside of South Carolina should look for the Robert C. Byrd Honors program. Each state apparently has its own version of this award, and for the Palmetto State, it includes a prerequisite 3.5 GPA, top scores on the SAT/ACT and letters proving leadership capabilities. If selected, the Byrd will award $1,500 a year to any accredited university.
