Apply For Scholarships - Act Like an Adult and Take Responsibility For Your Education

Yes it is Christmas time. All the pretty lights and holiday parties. But if you are planning to go to college next year, this is no time to celebrate. There will be plenty of time for that after you apply for scholarships and win some of them.
College is downright expensive. And you will need all the help you can get to pay for it. Sure, if you are just graduating from high school you can hope that your parents will pay. But don't bank on that one. These are tough times for all of us, including your parents. So if you want to go to college, you had better find out how to pay for it.
Right now thousands of schools, corporations, nonprofit groups, etc are accepting scholarship applications. Many will pick their winners for next year in the early spring, so if you have not started your hunt, then you are behind the eight ball right now. And don't just hope that your guidance counselor or financial aid advisor will find you all the scholarships you can apply for. This is wrong by a long shot. There are so many different little nooks and crannies that you need to search to find some cash so much so that it will amaze you.
So, how do you start this search? Well, many will tell you that your first step is to apply for the FAFSA. Now while for some scholarships this is required to show your financial need, it is not by all of them. So first look for some that are not dependent on need and apply for those. Of course, you will need to fill out the FAFSA eventually before starting college, but since this cannot be done until after you have your taxes (or your parent's taxes) done after the first of the year, you will run the risk of missing out on some great scholarship opportunities.
You will next want to do an extensive search to find and apply for scholarships that you qualify for. You can look at individual schools within your state or the state you are going to be attending school. I have found some pretty amazing ones this way such as the Barbara Frye Journalism Scholarship for Florida residents or the Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance Excel Awards.
You will also want to look at your area of study. There are scholarships given to engineer majors, teaching majors, health care majors and a whole lot more.
And you will also want to look to see if you have any unique features of your own that would qualify you for a scholarship such as being the first person in your family to attend college or being a minority student.
Remember, finding scholarships is not difficult, albeit time consuming. However, to actually apply for scholarships can take some time so it is always wise to start with the easiest ones, working your way to the most difficult.
